When most people think about helping out with Habitat, they think the only option is helping with construction on new homes.  But what if you can’t be trusted with a hammer?  What if you’re afraid of heights and can’t stand the idea of roofing?  What if you want to do all those things but just don’t think your back can take it?  You can still help!  There are many ways to volunteer with Habitat—construction is just a piece of the pie.

Here’s a list of ways you can help your local Habitat for Humanity chapter:

10: Join CHYP—Chattanooga Habitat Young Professionals, ages 21-40something.  CHYP’s purpose is to raise funds and advocate for Habitat for Humanity to assist with the mission of eliminating substandard housing.

9: Volunteer on build sites.  This is one of the big things we do, but not the only thing we do.  You will need to sign up for your hours in advance and take a brief orientation course.  And you have to be at least 16 to volunteer for construction—but don’t worry; we have opportunities for younger volunteers, too.

8: Attend events!  There’s the Tour of Homes, Lego Build, and the ReStore Drive in the spring, the Mud Run in August, the Chili Cook-Off in December, and groundbreakings and home dedications throughout the year.  More information become available closer to event dates.  Watch the website/facebook/twitter for details.

7: Pray!  We always need prayers for our homeowners, volunteers, and donors.

6: Volunteer at the ReStore.  ReStore takes donations of gently used furniture and new building materials and sells them to the public (not just Habitat Homeowners!) at a HUGE discount.  Volunteers are needed to help pick up donations from the community and in the store making sales and being friendly.

5: Join Youth United!  This is where the kiddos can help out.  Folks age 5-25 can help out doing age appropriate work, including writing thank you cards, stocking homeowner pantries, make a scrapbook, and tutoring partner family children, just to name a few.

4: Donate $.  Not only can you give time, but you can give money!  Habitat does receive some corporate and government assistance, but a large portion of our funds comes from individual donors.  You can give in honor/memory of a loved one, gifts of stock, in-kind gifts in the form of building materials, and planned gifts (like through your will or estate).  And remember, your gifts are considered charitable donations and can be written off on your taxes!  Every little bit helps!

3: Donate to ReStore: Send us your gently used furniture and building materials—another tax write-off!  Come in and see if there are any gems from other donors.  And remember to tell your friends!

2: Volunteer in the office: You can answer phones, do database entry, and other clerical work.  It’s easy on the knees!

1: Bring food to build sites for our wonderful volunteers!  Are you better with a whisk than a drill?  We can still use you on the site.  Bringing a breakfast of fruit and muffins or a lunch of sandwiches and cookies keeps our volunteers feeling good so they can give their all.

1780 to Brave Mud at 2nd Annual Chattanooga Mud Run!

Mud Run Registration is Closed, but Tickets for the Swamp Romp Still Available!

When the starting horn sounds at 9 am this Saturday, 1780 intrepid souls will set out on a 5k (3.1 mile) run through mud and military grade obstacles during the 2nd Annual Chattanooga Mud Run at Greenway Farms to benefit Habitat for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga Area’s program.

To win all members of a five-person team must cross the finish line together after running 5km (3.1 miles) through mud pits, up and down slippery hills , over and through other obstacles, created with the help of National Guard volunteers. 

While the mud will be slippery, the event has found its footing with 655 more participants than last year.  “We are thrilled that so many more folks will be joining us this year, “says Dawn Hjelseth, Habitat’s Director of Volunteers, and unofficial “Queen of the Mud.”   “This year’s course is bigger and features more obstacles, and of course, even more mud.  We have made improvements to all aspects of the event to help it run more smoothly for both participants and spectators alike.  We are also looking forward to see what kinds of creative costumes teams will be sporting.  Last year teams ran dressed as cows, Abraham Lincoln and a bridal party, among many others.”

The Mud Is Ready - Are You?

Thanks to support from Capital Toyota and Toyota of Cleveland, Hippie Radio 106.9, the Chattanooga Times Free Press, Strauss Company, Raymond James, the Tennessee National Guard and Track 29, as well as the strong team count, Habitat is hoping to raise at least $75,000.  “While team registration is now closed, there is still an opportunity for the community to give additional support to Habitat through the Swamp Romp,” says Hjelseth.

The Swamp Romp – the official Mud Run After Party will be held at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, August 20, at the First Tennessee Pavilion in Chattanooga.  The evening includes Corn Hole and Ladder Golf, a low-country boil dinner by Petunia’s Silver Jalapeno, with music by Lon Eldridge, Strung Like a Horse, and the W.T.M. Blues Band.  General admission tickets are $35 each. (Must be 21 to enter).  Tickets are available at the door, as well as Capital Toyota, the Chattanooga ReStore and online at www.chattanoogamudrun.com.  The Swamp Romp is produced by Chattanooga Presents and sponsored by the same organizations as the Mud Run.

Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce Helps ReStore Celebrate Reopening!

Chamber Ambassadors,  Mayor Ron Littlefield, Councilmen Jack Benson and Manny Rico, Habitat board members, volunteers and staff, celebrated the ReStore’s grand reopening with a ribbon cutting ceremony and reception this morning.  If you haven’t seen the ReStore yet, come see us this evening at 5 p.m. for a tour, food and some great music!

Habitat House Tour: The First Habitat Chattanooga TriPlex

Next week we dedicate Habitat for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga’s first Tri-Plex home! We are so excited about this project that we wanted to share it with you.  This is new design is Earth Craft and Energy Star efficient, as well as designed to fit the look and feel of the rest of the neighborhood. These are also our first homes with two stories. They look amazing!! All the homes are three bed-room, 2.5 bath, and around 1,200 sq. feet. 7. See if you work/company give out matching donations. That way your next donation (time or

money) will be doubled. Check with you supervisors today.

6. Put us in your Will or Estate Plans. We would love for Habitat to benefits after your lifetime, think of the difference you can make in the years to come.

5. Support our cause and spread the word on Facebook – the more people that know about us the better! Join our Facebook Group today!

4. Put one of our piggy-bank-houses on your desk or counter. Empty your spare change in it everyday and that will add up fact! If you want one of these piggy-bank-houses, e-mail me and we’ll send you one or stop by our office.

3. Attend our events – we have two awesome events coming up: Lego Day and Mud Run. Bring your father to Lego Day at the Chattanooga Market on June 19th! And before you do that, register to run the Mud Run- 3.1 miles of mud and obstacles!

Top Ten Tools Used at the Habitat Job Site

Many of you volunteers and DIY-ers are probably wondering what the top tools that volunteers use on the worksite. Well here are your answers:

1.Hammers
If you visit a worksite, you are sure to hear at LEAST one hammer, if you don’t – something is wrong!
2.Measuring Tape
As my dad always says, measure twice – cut once. Our volunteers work with donated materials – this is very important skill we stress in our orientation.
3.Utility Knife
This little tool comes in handy so many times during the day. We use it to cut siding, sharpen pencils, cut string, open bags, and sometimes even for lunch (just kidding!)
4.Pencil
It is very important to have an accurate mark when cutting– and pencils are always in high demand – yet they keep disappearing, does that ever happen to you?
5.Snips/ Cutters
Cutters come in handing while putting siding on a house!
6.Screw Drivers
I don’t know if you know this, but volunteers have the habit to put nails and screws every inch in house (which means they are strong, of course!) – so we need lots of screws and lots of  screwdrivers!
7. Levels
I know that something may look level, but we all know that your eyes are lying to us – that is why we stress the importance of levels! We want our homes to look professional.
8.Circular Saw
The most used power tool! We love to use these saws at site, and we love teaching people how to use them.
9.Router
Routers are most used in the beginning of the build. They are used for knocking out doors and windows from the house. (Only our most experienced volunteers get the pleasure of using this tool)
10.Tape
No lie, we use tape like it is our business. We use duct tape, electrical tape, and painting tape. As my grandfather always said, “Duct Tape is for everything,” I guess he was right!

Build-A-Thon 2011: Birmingham

This past week I got the privilege of going to the 2011 Build-A-Thon (BAT) Trip to Birmingham. BAT is an annual event that Habitat for Humanity International puts on for its AmeriCorps and National Service Members. (And it’s AmeriCorps Week, celebrating all the work that AmeriCorps is doing; check out here and here!)Build-A-Thon is a week (or three weeks this year) of building and improving houses all over the country.  This year BAT brought life to neighborhoods is seven different locations around the United States. AmeriCorps were doing everything from hurricane recovery in Mississippi, to rehab in Delaware, to LEED building in Seattle, and to tornado relief in Birmingham.

I had the privilege of heading down to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Birmingham and help with Tornado relief and  the Brush With Kindness program.  There were 60 AmeriCorps members from Maine to South Carolina! Over the week we helped over 15 families. It was an amazing time of learning about the successes and challenges that other affiliates face, as well as learning new construction techniques. We also got to witness the destruction of the Tornadoes that came through the area on April 27th, 2011. One neighborhood that was hit is a Habitat neighborhood. Over 20 houses were damaged, some beyond repair. We saw this on Monday, and it was crazy. We helped replace siding on some of these homes that were still standing and had minor damage. Thankfully, not one life of a Habitat Partner was lost.

The other four days of the trip were spent doing A Brush With Kindness projects, such as painting, fixing roofs, and planting flowers.

Overall it was a great trip, and it was great to meet people from all over the country dedicating a year of their life to Habitat. It was so rewarding to meet and help out many families that need assistance!

AmeriCorps Week

A couple of months ago, I talked about what it means to be an AmeriCorps VISTA working for Habitat here in Chattanooga (read the post here!). This week is AmeriCorps Week and we want to celebrate all the work AmeriCorps has done and is doing in this area, the state, and country!

For those of you who don’t understand how AmeriCorps Works, check out this cool graphic. As you can see, AmeriCorps members typically serve at a site (Habitat for Humanity in Chattanooga), which may be one of several sites served by a local AmeriCorps grantee or sponsor organization (Habitat for Humanity International).

AmeriCorps Tackles America’s Toughest Problems  

  • Service is a Solution:  More than 83,000 AmeriCorps members improve the lives of millions of our most vulnerable citizens each year.  AmeriCorps’ impacts are proven and measurable.
